Opal Apples Rock My World! Try Them!

About the Opal Apple: The Opal Apple was discovered in Europe in 1999. This new apple is a cross between a Golden Delicious and a Topaz. Over the last 10 years, Opal has been tested in 63 orchards throughout Europe and the Mediterranean.

  • A complex flavor treat that starts sweet and finishes with a little tang
  • Intense yellow in color with a wonderful crunch
  • Fruit flesh is resistant to oxidation, making it perfect for slicing
  • Stores and handles well with limited bruising
  • Available for a limited time

I am absolutely in love with Opal apples. I discovered them at Haggens not too long ago, and they are the crispest most deliticable apple ever! I even grew up on an Apple farm with so many apple varieties to choose form on a daily basis. These Opal apples still take the cake.

They are only available in select stores. In my area, Haggen is the only carrier.

They run around two dollars a pound, but they are worth it. I used to wait every year for the Honeycrisp apples to show up, but the Opal apples are so much better, I do not even care about the others anymore.

Seriously, try them out if you can get your hands on one. You will love them!

Licorice - The Wonder Candy!

You can feel good about eating licorice if you are watching your weight or if you want to eat healthy.

Ingredients in your standard RedVines licorice- The first three ingredients are Corn Syrup, Wheat Flour, and Molasses. 40g is just 140 calories (one and a half pieces of bread), zero fat, low sugar compared to total carbs.

Moderation is key of course.

You will find similarly healthy snacks in the sour punch straws and some other gummy products. I always look for candy that has a low sugar content compared to total carbs. This means that the food will be lower on the Glycemic Index and will serve more as "food".

Add some flavor to your snacks!

If you have not tried SnapDragon Pan-Asian Cuisine, you need to. Its good for you, dieter friendly fare that will blow your mouth away! The Teriyaki Spice is my current favorite. One box has a total of 360 calories, 9g fat, 3g protein. Not too bad for a box of succulent rice crackers that pop in your mouth.

Stevia-The New Wonder Sweetner with ZERO calories

Stevia rebaudiana, cultivated under glass in D...Image via Wikipedia

  • Stevia is an amazing breakthrough in artificial sweeteners BECAUSE it is NOT artificial, but it is still CALORIE Free. I've been using this for nearly a year now. I've tried liquid forms, granulated/flaky forms, and pre-installed (if you will) in new soda products that are beginning to multiply everywhere.
  • The two best versions of Stevia (a leaf extract from South America) are "Stevia in the Raw" and in the soda "Zevia".
  • If you wonder why you haven't seen this yet, there is a reason. Stevia has been approved forever for use as an herbal suplement sold in co-ops and such. Now, the FDA and European Countries in the last year have approved a regulated/standardized Stevia product for use in food products like sodas, gum, etc.
  • In most grocery stores next to the Splenda and the Aspartame boxes/bags is now this green colored foreigner-Stevia.
  • As I said, Stevia in the Raw, featured above dissolves the best,

Hominy-The Wonder Food!

  • Hominy is one of those long lost treasures of that can replace higher calorie starches in your diet and in recipes. Hominy is a great substitute for corn and things that call for potatoes.
  • The texture is meaty and is very satisfying to eat any time during the day.
  • Hominy is super high in fiber, low in fat, and has a bit of protein too.
  • Due to the high fiber content, it is really low in calories.
  • It is also extremely inexpensive to buy.
  • Large cans usually cost between $1.50-$2, and I've seen the "food service" sized cans go for under $3.00 on a regular basis.
  • Try it mixed in with eggs + Catsup or hot sauce. Try it in a meat and "potato" burrito in place of the potatoes. Try it to make Tuna Casserole instead of with Noodles.
  • You will be surprised how many high calory starches you can replace with hominy-EXPERIMENT!
